Klaus Wowereit: Politician, Interrupted

Handelsblatt Global, December 11, 2014

All political careers end in failure but that of Klaus Wowereit, the longstanding mayor of Berlin, has ended with a feeling of promise not quite fulfilled.

On Thursday Mr. Wowereit stepped down as mayor of Berlin after 13 years in office.

Charismatic, arrogant, witty, warm but adapt at making enemies, he leaves behind a divided legacy but undoubtedly a vastly different city.

He oversaw and played a vital part in Berlin’s arrival as the coolest city in Europe if not the world.
